LA JOLLA, Calif. — After the first round of a U.S. Open, we’ve become accustomed to seeing the players looking as though they’ve just stepped out of the dentist’s chair after a root canal or a deep gum cleaning — for some, both.

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Tiger Woods, who finished Thursday’s first round with a 1-over 72, posted two double bogeys in the first round of the U.S. Open. The last time he recorded a double bogey in competition on the South Course at Torrey Pines was on the 14th hole of the 2002 Buick Invitational. Thursday morning playing with Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson, Woods opened the par-4 first hole with the first of his two double bogeys on the day. It was his highest score on the first hole of a major championship since he opened with triple bogey on the first hole of the 2003 British Open at Royal St. George.
